A trailer for season two of Black British online web series Venus VS Mars was released on their Facebook page last week. The comedy, which follows the exploits of central character Venus as she goes in search of love, is one of my favourites online so I’m delighted it’s coming back. The show is written and conceptualised by BabyIsako and stars actress Letitia Hector as the feisty young protagonist who is unlucky in love. Baby created the show to counteract the negative one dimensional view of Black Britons that we’re often exposed to on mainstream TV. The writer told Guardian Journalist Bim Adewunmi (AKA Yoruba Girl Dancing) “I don’t like the representations of ‘blackness’ on British TV. For me, as a young black female, I cannot turn on the TV and find a character I can relate to, that I can identify with. Every time, they’re the girlfriend, the drug-related/gang/estate role. I’m not surrounded by people like that so I can’t watch those shows and relate. That’s why I became a writer, to write different roles.” In the trailer we see that Venus is continuing on her quest to find Mr Right and in the process finds herself involved in a series of hilarious dating disasters. It’s also nice to see the film has a slicker appearance, which hopefully means they’ve secured some additional funding. The series was recently nominated for two Screen Nation Digital Awards.
