I knew Natalie Stewart more commonly known as The Floacist was destined for stardom from the first time I saw her perform at popular poetry jam Black Pepper with her group 3 Plus 1 in the early noughties. Before the move to the US, before she joined forces with Marsha Ambrosius to form Floetry, Natalie was a regular on the poetry scene and became known for stealing the show with her intense, thought-provoking, intimate compositions. It was such a joy to watch Natalie and Marsha debut their blossoming group at that same poetry event, and then go on to to make a massive impression on the vibrant Philadelphia poetry scene before unleashing their unique brand of poetry and melody to the world (or as Natalie so eloquently puts it: ‘Poetic delivery with musical intent’). After five years of non-stop, sold out, touring and selling well over 1 million copies of three released albums and a live album DVD, as we all know, Floetry then went their separate ways. Natalie has since released three solo albums, the most recent being ‘RISE of the Phoenix Mermaid’ which was released earlier this year. Natalie says:
‘RISE is a compilation of a few songs that I wrote in 2006/7, at the point of the end of Floetry, that I didn’t have the opportunity to share but have now reworked and finally and am delighted to present to my audience, as well as a few completely new songs that I manifested in 2013, and I have also converted some of my favourite spoken word pieces into the Floetic ethos of song structure. The creation of this album has been about reflection, empowerment, self love, acceptance, submission, the Divine Feminine and the completion concept of endings leading to new beginnings.’
Natalie will be performing at the Jazz Cafe on Saturday August 9th and we’ve got a pair of tickets to give away. To be in with a chance of winning, answer this easy question and email your answer to thecocoadiaries@gmail.com
