The Brand New Heavies are by far my favourite group to come out of the acid jazz movement. Famed for their hypnotic fusion of jazz, soul and funk, they scored a slew of hits throughout the nineties including Never Stop, Dream on Dreamer and You’ve Got A Friend. One of my all-time ‘sunshiny, instantly gets me in a good mood’ tracks is Stay With Me. The BNH are the truth, maan. I had the opportunity to see them at The Jazz Cafe last year and through no fault of my own, turned up literally ten minutes before they walked off the stage. Gutted, to say the least. From what I witnessed, the group are FIRE live. N’Dea Davenport was singing like her life depended on it, while her ever-present musical comrades provided the undiluted funk, virtually sparking up the famous intimate venue… Well guess what folks, they are due back at the same venue on 9th December through to 12th December. The bad news? My girl N’Dea won’t be a part of the line up. The good? Newcomer Dawn Joseph will be providing the vocals, and from what I’ve heard, she has some serious skills as well. Tickets are priced from £25, book now, and don’t be like me, make sure you turn up on time. For tickets click here.
