Last week Laura Mvula released a new single entitled ‘Overcome’ from her forthcoming album and it’s absolutely beautiful. Produced by the legendary elder statesman of sound that is Nile Rodgers, the track merges the sonic essence of both artists so perfectly that I couldn’t help but put it on repeat all day (hey, Spotify). Admittedly it took a few listens. Initially Laura’s orchestral harmonies/haunting vocals and Nile’s trademark funky guitar riff seem at odds, but soon enough you realise they duly complement one another – both contrasting musical forces intertwining to create a moment of magic. While discussing the inspiration behind the song, Laura told Fader magazine, “The song is meant to echo what joy feels like—eventually. We’re all going through something, but even ‘the caged bird sings of freedom.”
Her most commercial sound to date, could this be the track that finally exposes her to the masses? Only time will tell. Laura also released the video today, and let’s just say it’s equally powerful, evocative and bloody brilliant (she even partakes in a dance routine, yess Laura). All this awesomeness is making us yearn for the album like, now. Do yourself a favour and press play. And you can watch the video here. On a totally unrelated note: glad to see she’s back rocking the short crop (thumbs up).
