If the glorious weather keeps up in London, I can’t think of a better way to spend a mid-summer night’s evening than taking in a performance of Porgy & Bess currently showing at Regent Park’s Open Air Theatre until August 23rd. The classic Gershwin musical immortalised on film by Dorothy Dandridge and Sidney Poitier is currently enjoying a run at one of London’s most exquisite outdoor spaces. For those who are not familiar with the story, Porgy, is a down and out disabled beggar, who dedicates his life to saving temptress Bess from a life of ruin. All the drama unfolds against a backdrop of iconic musical standards such as Summertime, I Love You Porgy and It Ain’t Necessarily So.
“One of these mornings, you’re gonna rise up singing, then you’ll spread your wings and you’ll take to the sky”
In this modern adaptation the lead roles are played by Rufus Bonds Jr and Nicola Hughes. The production also stars Phillip Boykin, Jade Ewen and Sharon D Clarke. For tickets book here.
