“N.P.G. in this funky house…” Words that former music megastar Prince would be heard calling out on his record breaking 21 nights at London’s O2 just over a decade ago.
On what would have been his 60th birthday The Cocoa Diaries can share that the powerhouse band who backed him on some of his greatest moments – think Diamonds & Pearls, Cream, Gett Off and The Most Beautiful Girl in the World – are going to be playing at the IndigO2 on August 2.
Led by Prince’s former – and longest serving – keyboard player Morris Hayes, the group do more than just pay tribute to their former mentor, they breathe new life into some of his greatest (and funkiest) material.
For a flavour of what the New Power Generation can do, read our review from last summer’s red hot gig at Nell’s Jazz and Blues club. There’s a reason why Prince once described them as his greatest ever band.
“Lay down your funky weapon”, and come join them on the floor! Tickets on sale at Eventim now.
…and in other Purple news… To coincide with his birthday of 7 June, Prince’s estate have just announced a new release of previously unheard solo piano and microphone performances from 1983, recorded just months before 1984s Purple Rain album and film became a global phenomenon.
