Minneapolis stays churning out musically gifted individuals. In what can be described as the post-Prince era, singer/songwriter/playwright/actress Timotha Lanea is definitely a worthy contender as one of the latest additions to the US city’s rich musical heritage. The multi-gifted performer gained recognition a few years ago on account of her album Red which introduced us to her stirring vocals that lifts influences from classic soul songstresses such as Tweet, Jill Scott and Sy Smith. Lanae returns in 2016 with a new sound and new offering entitled Open Road, penned and sung alongside Ryan Liestmanm. The track is a soul-reggae fused mid-tempo groover, which laments on a relationship that has run its course, and the need to forgive and keep it moving for spiritual growth.
In a novel move, Timotha has set her followers an Open Road Challenge in keeping with the theme, urging those of us who still harbour ill feelings towards anyone who has disappointed us in the past, to simply let it go. Lanae says, “There’s so much division and turmoil going on in the world and sometimes it seems like we’re limited in what we can do. The Open Road Challenge is something that starts with us. Get involved by deciding to let go of past hurts, guilt, shame, or self-image hang ups. Take the first step in mending relationships by saying, ‘I’m sorry’, or extending forgiveness.” The singer wants us to share the challenges we have overcome or relationships we have mended, by documenting our success online using the #OpenRoadChallenge hashtag.
