If you’re looking for some new music to get into, check out south London based newcomer Laura Jae. Described as a ‘ mix between the darkly atmospheric tones of James Blake, the experimental sentiments of Bjork and the gritty melodies of King Krule‘ the singer certainly caught my ears on the first listen. Vocally, her tone is quite intense and haunting, and musically her sound is equally shadowy and sombre (her music would work really well as a soundtrack to an intense TV drama). Born in Greenwich, London, Laura is said to have grown up exposed to a diverse range of music including Norah Jones, The Carpenters, Sade, Michael Jackson and Whitney. While Laura’s music isn’t the kind I’d typically listen to, I love when black female singers are left of centre, bold, experimental and unique – all of which Laura definitely is.
