A dynamic new play has been announced as part of this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival. WOKE is a one-woman production written and staged by Apphia Campbell, offering an unflinching look at the overt and systemic racism experienced by African Americans throughout history till present day.
The show tells the story of two real life women 42 years apart who are committed to the fight for the civil rights of black people, one, Assata Shakur, a powerful figure in the Black Panther movement and the second, a university student whose political consciousness awakens at the beginning of the Black Lives Matter movement. Both women challenge the American justice system, become criminalised due to their political activism and are forced to make a decision on whether to fight or flee. The production features original music as well as traditional gospel and blues music.
WOKE will be performed at the Gilded Balloon Teviot Wine Bar, from Friday 4th August to Monday 28th August. For tickets visit here.
