Dreamgirls made its way into the public consciousness in 1981 when it debuted on Broadway. Starring the formidable talents of Sheryl Lee Ralph (Deena James), Loretta Devine and Jennifer Holiday (Effie White), the production was an instant hit, winning a slew of awards and accolades. The story; said to be loosely based on The Supremes meteoric rise to fame, is a timeless tale of the perilous trappings associated with the entertainment industry as experienced by three young women from Chicago. With a soundtrack of irresistible, finger-snapping, sing-along R&B classics, it has all the elements of the perfect musical, merging song, dramatic tension with a pertinent moral message. In 2006 Dreamgirls successfully transported from the stage to the silver screen with Beyonce, Anika Noni Rose, and of course, Jennifer Hudson, taking on those iconic roles (with Hudson famously winning an Oscar in the process for her powerful, nuanced interpretation of embattled singer Effie White).
This autumn, famed singer/actress Amber Riley will take over the reigns as Effie when Dreamgirls heads to the UK. Showing at The Savoy Theatre, it’s one of the most anticipated musicals this year, and I simply can’t wait to see it. Expect all the classic songs including And I’m Telling You, One Night Only and Listen as well as glitter, glam and some powerful, show-stopping vocal performances. Recently the supporting cast was announced and includes Ibinabo Jack as Lorrell Robinson and Liisi La Fontaine as Deena Jones. Dreamgirls premieres on Saturday 19th November, you can book your tickets here.
