More images from the Pride magazine’s August ‘Identity’ issue featuring the Noisette’s front-woman Shingai Shoniwa. The shoot was styled by Pride’s dynamo Fashion Editor, Shevelle Rhule, and snapped by (Tyra voice) noted fashion photographer: Joseph Sinclair. Absolutely flawless. The styling choices perfectly compliment Shingai’s quirky nature and the hair and make up are simply stunning.
The cover feature was written by Pride’s Entertainment Editor Joanna Abeyie. and features some great quotes. She sounds like a real free spirited firecracker and a good laugh. Here are a few:
On her svelte frame:
“I know how annoying it is when people who are naturally skinny are like I don’t have to pick at my food. I’ve got Kenyan running genes- what can I do? besides I’ve taken the flack- I spent my teens being called ‘margar’”.
On copying other celebs:
“American marketing campaigns will take something and run with it and kill it. They will decide on shoulder pads and then they kill it. I’m not for copying what they do. I could go to London Fashion Week and then down to Deptford market, there’s lots of inspiration you don’t need to copy.”
On wearing her hair natural:
“They shouldn’t feel like if they don’t have straight hair that they won’t be successful or they don’t feel sexy or confident. We should be advocating pro-choice if you should do whatever you want to do with your hair and power to that.”
And I had no idea that Shingai was a fellow South Londoner:
“I was born in Lewisham hospital, I was raised in southeast London but now I live in South west. But I love south-east London because you don’t get a sense of humour like it. You’ve got your markets- we used to go to east street market loads and black market in Lewisham, and patties are still 80p there! It’s nice to sort of come back from a tour and just eat a pattie.”
Pride magazine is out in stores now.
